This is the first audiobook that ever I listened to. I started listening to it before a long road trip. That sold me on mainly listening to audiobooks

Taffy1951, when I see comments like yours, I am confused and always wondering why you don’t use a dedicated audiobook app? I use the free open-source Android app, LISTEN. I never know whether I’m listening to an audiobook divided into multiple files or one file, and I never know if I’m listening to an mp3 or an MB4 or whatever they’re called. The audiobook plays the same regardless. Every book remembers the speed I last used, and where I left off, and of course I can create annotated bookmarks.
(Also, if a download is helplessly stuck at, say, 97%, I can still listen to the audiobook. As I recall, it just skips over the missing data, and it’s hardly ever noticeable.)
Obviously I’m a big fan of Listen, which is still being developed and updated. I also found an excellent non-commercial audiobook app for iPhones, when I was researching the options for a friend. I don’t remember the name but I’m sure any number of people here could tell you
Anyway, I’m genuinely wondering why you want everything in mp3. Why don’t you just use an audiobook app?
ps: I started listening to audiobooks when they were still on cassette tape. I would borrow each ‘book’ of cassettes from the main Denver public library, and play them in my kitchen via in a boombox (which had been Left behind by a crack user who was squatting in an apartment down the hall). Back then, due to the medium of cassettes, the narrator spoke rapidly with little to no voice acting. As you know by now, listening to audiobooks is a learned skill, and I had to repeatedly stop what I was doing (like washing dishes) and go hit rewind for a couple seconds. Sometimes repeating the same section again & again. Eventually I was listening to audiobooks by Frank Muller and other narrators without spacing out then having to press the (mechanical) rewind button.
Then I switched to a regular audio app after discovering free unlocked audiobooks. And for months, I use something like VLC, and actually wrote notes in a text file tell me the time where I left off.
When I discovered audiobook software, I was incredibly impressed. So I can’t imagine why anyone would not choose to use an audiobook app like Listen

Seriously epic author! My favorite by him is Influx! But everything he has written is epic. I highly recommend anything by Daniel.
